My work is diverse in subject, price, and medium! My small studies are usually done in watercolors. After that, I might go larger in watercolors, or oils, or acrylics! I have lived on a boat for many years, and now that I have a house, it's fun to explore other mediums! My husband is also an artist and is much more 3D than myself ! So, he helps create my framing, etc.

Function is my main source of inspiration. I have been making functional pottery for over 40 years. My goal as a potter is for a relationship to develop between the user and her pot. As you raise a cup of coffee to your lips in the morning, an intimacy develops and your cup has become an integral part of your life. My finished pots, with their designs, patterns and glazes, convey a love of the materials (the clay) from which they are made, a vitality for life and integrity of form. I work in both terra cotta and porcelain. I have a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

My preference for oils and pastels stems from a love of the rich color each has. My smaller landscapes are frequently done plein air because I love to study the subtleties that can only be seen first hand. Working on a still life gives me a chance to specify the design / architectural elements as well as color. The process is joyful. It fills my spirit.

Joy's fun, wearable art is inspired by the colors and textures of combinations of glass, shell, crystal, porcelain, and silver plated metal beads, tubes and charms. Her techniques are varied and include knitting, weaving, crochet, macrame and braiding. She uses a strong .8mm elastic cord to make her bracelets. Her popular stretch bracelet/necklace can be twisted into a triple strand bracelet or worn as a necklace. Joy's simple necklaces are strung with silver plated beading cord and beads of all styles. More complex knitted necklaces combine several techniques using strung beads or glass chips on sterling silver plated wire, or non tarnish colored wire, and are finished with magnetic clasps making them easy to put on and take off.

My paintings are geometrically-abstract works that emphasize grid-based relationships, rhythm, and internal space. Working with a reductive palette of white, grey and black allows me to emphasize serene arrangements of forms, using subtleties of texture and color to create a quiet material presence. I think of my work as an antidote to the time-bound, homocentric, mechanical logic of our culture, as a respite for the eye and the soul.

ABOUT
Ever wonder what an artist’s studio really looks like? Chestertown RiverArts Annual Studio Tour allows the visitor a chance to take a sneak peak inside Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties creative spaces. This free, self-guided tour on the picturesque Eastern Shore of Maryland takes place over two Fall weekends rain or shine. More than 50 artists, many nationally known, invite visitors in to talk, check out how they work, and provide the opportunity to buy original artwork at studio prices.

The art is as diverse as the artists who create it, with styles ranging from traditional to avant-garde, expressed in a variety of media that include painting, photography, sculpture, metal work, pottery, fiber, woodcraft, jewelry, furniture, glass, and more. Studios are also varied with several studio galleries, independent studios in two small art complexes and many at the artist’s homes – some detached from the main house and some inside the home itself. In a few instances there are artists displaying their work at a venue other than their own studio.

Situated on a scenic peninsula where the Chester and Sassafras Rivers meander into the Chesapeake Bay, Kent County has retained its serene beauty despite the passage of time. Located on the banks of the Chester River, Chestertown is the oldest mid-Atlantic port of entry. It has been designated by the state of Maryland as an Arts and Entertainment District; its mayor, Chris Cerino remarked, “The downtown arts scene has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade…Chestertown is fast becoming a regional arts destination.” In addition to the charm of Chestertown, out-of-towners often remark on how much they enjoy the tranquility of the countryside, water views and small, friendly towns.

It is recommended that visitors start their tour at the RiverArts Gallery, 315 High Street, Suite 106 where there will be an exhibit of works by the artists on the tour to help decide on must-see venues. Brochures are available from local Chestertown establishments and at RiverArts. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11-4, Saturday, 10-4. During the Studio Tour, Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10-5.

Combine your Studio Tour with Chestertown’s Schooner Sultana Downrigging weekend. Sultana is joined by many historic tall ships and Chesapeake Buyboats. Many interesting art studios are within easy walking distance of the ships. All this makes for a fun family outing.

Only 90 miles from Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, the tour can be a great day trip. However, with more than 40 studios on the tour, you may wish to make a weekend of it. If you wish to make a weekend of it, information on lodging, restaurants, and other attractions is available at www.kentcounty.com or contact our Tourism Development Office at 410-778-0416.

We hope that you will join us!
